“The Online Safety Expert Group (OSEG), is an informal multi-stakeholder gathering of online safety experts and organisations from across Europe working together to ensure online child safety legislation is practical, effective and respects the rights of both parents and children.”
History
The OSEG was created in 2025 and is made up of an informal grouping of child welfare organisations from around Europe that wish to ensure that legislation intended to ensure the safety of children online is practical, effective and respects the rights of parents and children.
Our work (so far)
Digital Services Act: The first gathering of the OSEG was a meeting in Brussels in May 2025 to review of the Digital Services Act – article 28 guidelines which the group found were practical and useful. For the findings of this workshop and consequent actions click here:
Social media bans for minors: In late 2025 the issue of legislation banning minors from social networks has been raised in a number of countries, and the group has developed a position document setting out why bans are not a simple solution to many of the issues affecting minors on social media. Participation
OSEG is an informal knowledge and experience sharing group. It is not a membership organisation or a formal institution. Organisations are free to opt-in or out as they see fit. The operation of the group is evolving and will be reviewed in early 2026.
Operations
OSEG is a voluntary grouping with no funding or direct costs. Currently the administration of OSEG is coordinated by Denton Howard who is an independent online safety consultant.
